Equity Literacy Project: Highland Park Presentation/Discussion
The Equity Literacy Project is an online educational resource for educators and community members to increase their awareness of terms and ideas related to issues of equity in our schools and other public institutions.
In this session, members from the group from Harper College in Palatine that developed the Equity Literacy Project will share some of the key ideas as an introduction, as well as invite attendees to share their experiences and ideas to continue the growth of the resource.
General topics will include:
- Discussion of equality and equity in our communities.
- How are equality and equity different.
- Myths created by the “bootstrap” narrative.
- Anticipation Guide Activity: what beliefs do you hold that may continue to reinforce structural inequalities?
- Micro aggressions and personal accountability.
- Increasing our awareness and capacity.
- Crowdsourcing and continual growth.
Presenters Include: E-B Martinez and Stephanie Whalen, PhD
The Art Center Highland Park continues to require mask-wearing in our building with the except when eating and drinking.
Potluck Dinner – we find that food is the way to ‘set the table’ for sharing and encourage people to bring food that represents themselves, whether it is a family favorite, an ethnic dish passed down over generations, or you just don’t have time and stop off at a local restaurant for take-out. Food brings us together!
What to bring? We’ve played it ‘by ear’ so far and it has all worked out. TAC supplies plates, silver, tablecloths and beverages.
