Seeking Out the Other: A Potluck Dinner

Wednesday, Dec 8, 2021

6:30pm – 8:30pm

A kick-off event for a wider initiative that will partner with the Highland Park Library, the Justice Project, and other groups to create open dialogues about diversity and inclusion on the north shore. With a potluck dinner* we will experience a basic community-building experience: ‘breaking bread together’, sharing foods from different households that have meaning to each participant*.

The Art Center Highland Park is a welcoming space that inspires and ignites a passion for the arts; providing a forum for self-expression, dialogue, and community engagement. This event allows us to celebrate ‘heterophily’, or love of ‘other’, which allows us to challenge set ideas and open up to new experiences, vs ‘homophily’, or love of the same, a survival mechanism, which creates a closed circuit and can lead to stagnation. This event is art in action and will be held in the galleries at TAC with our latest exhibits as background.

Our guest will be Vashon Jordan, Jr**, a Chicago photographer and author of the book, The Chicago Protests: A Joyful Revolution***. Vashon managed to capture over 17,000 photographs of the Black Lives Matter Protests. From his book cover: “Despite being spurred by violence, this revolution was built on peace, love, joy, led by the youth, and occurred during the pandemic of COVID-19”.

All invitees are encouraged to reach beyond their small social groupings and to invite someone outside their ‘normal’ acquaintance to celebrate difference, inclusion, and diversity.

There is no fee for this event but due to COVID restrictions, we will restrict attendance to 30 participants.

Please understand that we ask that you are vaccinated and wear a mask when not seated and eating.

*Visit Google Sheets here to list what you’ll bring for the potluck TAC will provide plates, utensils, seating, beverages

**Vashon is currently the Staff Photographer at JB for Governor and is on call for events relating to his position. If he is not able to be ‘live’ we will either pre-record an interview or attempt to have him ZOOM live with participants.

***Purchase the book ahead of time or we will have limited availability at TAC that evening.
