A curriculum and classroom designed especially for the preschool and kindergarten child. Creative explorations through stories, art and play. A mixed media class using watercolors, oil pastels, tempera paint, collage and more. A new project every week! Facilitated by professional artist and certified teacher Carole Pearlman.
This class is perfect for those with no experience and also for those with prior experience. We will be exploring many traditional techniques such as wet-into-wet, dry brush, lifting out, wet-into-dry, sponging, graduated washes, and more. Students will have an opportunity to work with watercolor paints and/or watercolor pencils.
This class is for students who have reached the mid level to advanced level of figure drawing. We will be moving at a fast pace with emphasis on further developing the students current abilities. Model studies will be from two to three weeks each allowing the individual students to explore questions and solve problems in their work. This class is not appropriate for beginners.

Learn to really use your digital camera and enhance your computer skills. We will introduce Adobe Bridge and Photoshop as well. Students should bring their digital camera, cable, manual and any accessories to the first class.
This fun and informative course provides a great foundation for the mosaic beginner, but there is so much information that most people come back time after time. Bernadette will take you through the mosaic creative process one step at a time, way beyond the naive concept of “crazy paving” and ”colouring in” with broken tiles. Lots of different mosaic materials will be covered. Students provide their own materials. You will learn cutting, shaping techniques and classical laying techniques of the tesserae from first principles.
For new and intermediate students, this class explores the many techniques involved in taking ideas from conception to the completion of wearable metal art. Individual students’ skills will be expanded as we delve into sawing, soldering, riveting, texturing, stone-setting and fold forming.

If you want assignments that encourage creativity, then this class is for you. We will review historical and contemporary photography as well as make our own photographs based on assignments given every other week. Class will include critique, shooting and photoshop technique as needed. Intermediate/Advanced.
This 4 week course is aimed at giving beginning social media students a good foundation in the world of social media. It provides an equal balance of interactive presentation, discussion and group work on the applications that personal and businesses should be starting to use in their marketing mix. Ages: 40 and up.
This class is for students with little or no prior drawing knowledge of the figure or those who want to brush up on basic skills. The class will be exercise laden with a strong emphasis on “seeing”. All you need is soft charcoal and a news print pad and you’re on your way.

In this multi level class, demonstrations will be tailored to the skill levels of the students. While working on a project of your own design, learn or enhance your skills in soldering, riveting, basic enamels, etching, forming, etc. All levels welcome. ($20 supply fee included in class cost).
Whether you are just starting or have been painting for a while, this class will expand your skills. We’ll cover basics and explore new methods for the more advanced. This class is also a studio class where you progress with instructor input at your pace.
You will learn and investigate painting with pastel. Pastel is a medium that allows you to use pure dry pigments, while learning the techniques and tricks from an expert in a friendly atmosphere.
Artists at all levels will use the language of form, color, and line to create art with varying degrees of independence from visual references. Since abstraction exists along a continuum we will explore and develop art ranging from partially abstracted to totally non-objective. Class explores abstract art styles (i.e. cubism, expressionism) and focuses on personal expression and group processing.

Acquire and refine skills in metal by drawing upon the expertise of the instructor. Sawing, soldering, finishing, stone setting, forming, construction, color on metal techniques. Also work with glass on metal, firing opaque and transparent colors on copper or silver, silver foils and overglazes. For all skill levels.

Discover how to draw the human form from live models. Explore gesture, anatomy, line, and tone using a variety of drawing tools. Each class will include quick gesture and longer poses and is great for beginners or for those who have been away from the drawing board for a while.

Students will also have the opportunity to create their own games. They will also be encouraged to play their games in class when they are completed.
Students will explore film development and printing with a focus on composition, light, texture and creative ideas. We will head outdoors to explore the splendor of the season. Let’s explore clay. This is a hand-building based ceramics class for children ages 7-10. We will make functional as well as sculptural work by focusing on the process of clay, our creativity, as well as the art of ceramics. All while having lots of fun. All work will be glazed and food safe. (Class cost includes supply fee for clay, glazes and firing).
Create “Objets d’Art” by painting on everyday objects (old frames or mirrors, stools, coat hangers, garden tools, etc.) From décorative realist to abstract. The objects can become functional or not. Great for gift giving.

A fun class for anyone who loves to watch movies, this course will give you the tools to understand the complex visual practices, and theories behind the cinema arts. The class will focus on cinematography, symbolism, editing, narrative, sound, Hitchcock, classifications, and cinema history.
Learn how easy it is to take wonderful digital photographs of your children. Do you always have trouble getting the photo you want of your kids? Just bring your digital camera that has a manual setting that can adjust the shutter speed, lens aperture/f-stop and ISO. It doesn’t matter if it is point and shoot or has interchangeable lenses. For those of you that have Photoshop Elements at home and would like to learn the basics, this is the class for you. We will be learning basic photo editing fundamentals with a concentration on ease-of-use.
Learn to loosen up while you work from still-life studies and/or photographs. For beginners and up, this class will teach you techniques with oil paints and explore different ways to approach painting. The process of painting will be emphasized more than the end product, but the end product might just surprise you.
This class will be an intensive exploration of Arashi Shibori (pole wrapping) on natural fabrics (cotton, silk, linen). Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist dyeing technique used to create beautiful designs especially for kimono. Arashi Shibori has been used for summer kimonos and interior decorations. Arashi means storm, and in Japanese art, “storm” is illustrated by sharp diagonal parallel lines. In addition to the Arashi Shibori basic, over dyeing, discharge, and Bo-maki applications will be introduced.
Learn the fundamentals of making jewelry with wire, sheet metal, cold connections and soldering. In this class you will learn, make and take home rings, pendants and bracelets. Basic metal forming skills: sawing, filing, sanding, texturing, roller printing, soldering and polishing will be taught as well as forming techniques, patinas, and cold connections. This is a beginner level class. No experience necessary. ($20 supply fee included in class cost).

Working both on the pottery wheel as well as with many different hand-building techniques: coils, pinch, slab construction. The work will be both functional as well as sculptural. Letting the teens explore their creative side. All work will be food safe and ready to use.
Students will learn the basics of cartooning. Create characters and use their imagination with pen, ink and techniques of watercolor.
In this intermediate digital techniques class, we will examine ideas of composition, context and lighting, with a focus on landscape and still life. We’ll also cover basic retouching in Photoshop. Bring digital camera (SLR or camera w/aperture, shutter speed control recommended) to first class.
Portraiture instruction for all levels. Study form through anatomy, values, color theory and lighting on a costumed model. Work in the medium of your choice.
Intermediate and advanced students will work on independent projects supplemented by demonstrations of advanced techniques such as etching, enameling, wax carving, casting, fold forming, keum boo, hydraulic forming, aluminum anodizing, stone setting, etc. Students should be comfortable with basic sawing and soldering prior to taking this class. Instructor will provide private, individualized instruction and constructive critique for painters in any medium (acrylic, oil, watercolor, etc.) Students work individually and receive technical and critical support. Entire class time is dedicated to studio time with consultation from instructor.

Improve your understanding and ability taking wonderful digital photographs. Do you understand how to use your digital camera, but want to get more out of the special features? You must have a good understanding of the photographic triangle, the ability to understand and use the basic functions of your Digital SLR camera. Your camera must have manual settings that can adjust the shutter speed, lens aperture/f-stop and ISO. You must also bring to class your tripod and external flash.
Take the time to pursue your own individual ideas through your art. Work in the medium of your choice from watercolor, acrylics and oils to pastels, charcoal or colored pencil. Working from photos, still life or your imagination. Instruction will be given on techniques to develop your work.
Chicago is a great metropolitan city with amazing urban locations. Join an experienced film director on great field trips to find the best shooting spots. Digital camera is required and emphasis is on creativity, light and composition.

Come try your hand at Encaustics! Learn the many techniques of this ancient painting medium using hot beeswax and paint pigment. Techniques covered will be painting, glazing, surface textures, photo transfers, and collage. (Includes $20 supply fee)

Students will be provided with a pendant base, stained glass, beads, rods, millefiore, tools and adhesive. Students will receive Individualized Instruction. Materials provided. Are you always searching resale shops and EBay for decorative elements to finish your mosaic, assemblage or ceramic piece? Or maybe you want to create your signature motif to add to your project. In this workshop we will be making 3-Dimensional flowers/roses, textured clay shapes and molded forms. We will finish pieces using a variety of luster glazes.

Students will learn the traditional Japanese art form of Suminagashi. Marble-like patterns are created by floating ink on water, the designs are transferred to absorbent paper. No two are ever alike and finished pieces may be framed or used in craft projects.
Learn Dichroic Glass Fusing utilizing slide, gold transfer, and Millefiore. Gain the technical expertise to continue to fuse on your own. Students at any skill level enjoy learning and experimenting while making several pieces of wearable art.
