DESCRIPTION:April 29th-June 11th.\n\nArtists Reception: May 20th, 2022.\n\nThe debut of this exhibition on April 29th coincides with Common Thread, our 2022 Spring Benefit. This is a ticketed event, tickets can be purchased here.\n\nFree, general admission to the exhibit begins on April 30th.\n\nIn the 1970’s, artists such as Judy Chicago coined the phrase Feminist Art to encompass women in the arts, especially those working with fiber. The traditional association of women in textiles and crafts that had been considered “less than” became more than the leaders of a movement in art; they ushered in a generational shift that exposed the misuse and misrepresentation of women in general and opened doors for many women artists in general.\n\nThe Art Center Highland Park (TAC) exhibits Fiber⋅Fashion⋅Feminism April 29-June 11, 2022. The theme, though wide in scope, narrows the intersection of fiber arts, the world of fashion, and the sociopolitical terms of feminism. With the basic definition of fiber deriving from the textile industry, the work in the exhibit looks beyond the mere use of material, understanding the historical context, especially when it comes to women in the labor force. In addition, the exhibition looks at the evolution of the fashion industry, which is both geared towards women and has been exploitative of women. In this context, the ideas around perceptions of perfection of the female body, how clothing reflects self, identity, and culture, are approached through the lens of the artist’s perspective.\n\nThe artists represented exemplify how form, material, and theme coincide to push the boundaries of traditional fiber art, resulting in a new look at contemporary feminist art. Each artist in their own language re-examines fiber as an art form, and shows how fashion infiltrates and overlaps with the medium to explore their own identities and roles. Their explorations represent the voice and expression that define the term feminism in today’s world and together reflect the intersection of the three, Fiber⋅Fashion⋅Feminism.\n\nExhibiting Artists: Maria Pinto, Laura Morrison, Ginny Sykes, Nirmal Raja, Yana Schnitzler, Katrin Schnabl, Marty Ornish, Nneka Kai and Jennifer Markowitz.\n\nPictured above: Nneka Kai, Took a Step Back
