Although the story that my paintings are trying to tell me can often be hermeneutic, at the same time, art cannot separate from the world.  As our lockdown approached and overwhelmed us, and as the world burst out in anger and violence, which has not subsided, I found myself looking at past masters who turned to the saints for succor (Tintoretto) or to scenes of self-imposed agony (Van Laer) or just to … a pixie, waiting, in a waiting room, for what?  Something better, I hope.  Art can’t do much, but it can bear witness.
