Beauty Imperfect
RONIT WIENER, POLINA REISMAN, AND JOYCE MARCUS
March 1st – April 1st, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, March 1st, from 6:30pm – 9:00pm & Sunday, March 3rd from 1:00pm-3:00pm
The Art Center – Highland Park presents Beauty Imperfect, featuring the work of Ronit Wiener, Polina Reisman, and Joyce Marcus. The artists strive to reclaim the concept of beauty by celebrating the female form in various life stages. Their paintings and sculptures embrace the vitality of real women whose lined faces reflect wisdom, folded flesh reveal maternal love and graying tresses embody confidence. Using bright colors and fluid sculpting, the artists demonstrate the beauty of the feminine imperfection. We are excited to invite you to join us the evening of Friday, March 1st from 6:30 – 9:00pm and Sunday, March 3rd from 1:00-3:00pm for the opening reception, including drinks and other refreshments. Admission is free and open to the public.
About the Artists:
Ronit Wiener’s paintings use text, color and drips to obscure images – and images to obscure text. The layers compete with each other, yet bind them together. She uses these elements to convey strong images of how women portray beauty to themselves and to the world. Her work is provocative and intriguing. It visually stimulates the viewer to re-examine how language and images define beauty and manipulate it. www.ronitgallery.com
Polina Reisman creates expressionist portraits that capture subsurface emotions and thoughts. She focuses on faces suggesting inner life to access the truth revealed when one’s guard is lowered. Her work recognizes that imperfection is what makes us unique, beautiful and human, inviting viewers to find a connection between themselves and the subjects. www.polinagallery.com
Joyce Marcus’ sculptures focus on both classic and realism, with an emphasis on proportion and anatomy, and gesture, playing with elements of rhythm and movement, evolving, then, her work into a more abstract representation of the human body. Her sculptures are colored with glazes, stains, oxides and paints in various combinations to enrich the textured surface of the clay.

Voices and Visions – Standing on the Bridge Between Health and Disease
October 5th – November 10th, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, October 5th from 6:30 – 9:00pm
Most people know someone who has been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer. Women everywhere face the fear of diagnosis every year as they enter radiology for mammograms or doctors examinations. This October, Caren Helene Rudman curates the exhibit “Voices and Visions: Standing on the Bridge between Health and Disease” at The Art Center – Highland Park, which gives voice to those affected by women’s health issues.
From October 5th through November 10th, The Art Center – Highland Park will host an exhibit of work which expresses the impact of dealing with breast or ovarian cancers. Whether one has hereditary risk factors, is a carrier of the BRCA mutation, or has lived with or cared for a loved one who has endured women’s cancers, the work reflects the concerns brought about by the diseases. A wall of statements written by women from across the country who have been affected by these diseases will address the question: How has cancer or the threat of cancer affected your life? Voices and visions hope is to empower all of us who live on the bridge between health and disease.
