Bert Menco, Dutch – Chicago Interactions

September 14th – November 3rd, 2013
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 14th 6:30-9:00pm

Bert Menco (Arnhem, The Netherlands, 1946) works in printmaking, drawing, and painting. He has had numerous solo shows and his art is represented in many public and private collections, including that of the Rotterdam Museum and the Illinois State Museum. He won several awards, e.g., at the Third Sapporo International Print Biennale (1996, Japan) and at an International Print Show in Sobral (Brazil, 2012). He came to the US in 1982 where he worked for many years as a Research Professor at Northwestern University.

Through the overall theme in Bert’s work is human interactions and sometimes lack thereof, he states that he is not good at making works for a specific show, but rather sees his exhibitions as an “accumulative retrospective”. Next to his career in science he has always been very active in the arts and his art is insofar affected by his research activities, that the often-tedious discipline needed in research is also used in his art; reaching the final image is like a research goal.
